MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8

Today’s passage from the book of Exodus describes the covenant between God and the Israelite people. A covenant is a solemn agreement made between two parties and was usually sealed in blood. In ancient times, blood was considered the source of life. To sprinkle two people with the same blood bonded them as closely as if they were blood relatives.

Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15

On Yom Kippur, the high priest sacrificed a goat on the altar in the temple. Then he took some of the blood into the holiest place in the temple sanctuary where only he was allowed to go. There, he sprinkled that blood as a renewal of the covenant made at Mount Sinai, and prayed that God would forgive the sins they had committed during the previous year. This ritual is the backdrop for today’s reading from the letter to the Hebrews.

Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 (Passover Preparation)

Question of the Week:

Adult: In what ways have you practiced the words of Jesus and been bread for others?

Child: What can you do to prepare to celebrate Holy Communion with your parish family?

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40

Paul’s letter to the Romans is his most detailed and important theological work. In this portion of the letter, Paul stresses the importance of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. Through the Spirit’s presence within us, we enjoy not only new life but also a new relationship with God, whom we can call by a new name.

Pentecost was a Jewish feast that celebrated the beginning of the harvest. It took place 50 days after the feast of Passover. Jewish pilgrims came to Jerusalem from all over the ancient world for the celebration. Today we hear how Pentecost became a Christian feast.

Second Reading: Galatians 5:1-25

In concluding his letters, St. Paul always had a section instructing his converts about the correct way to live as Christians. Today’s passage comes near the end of his letter to the Galatians who lived in what is today central Turkey. Paul offers a sharp contrast between life in the flesh (meaning: life prone to sin) and life in the Spirit.

“We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life”

The power of the Resurrection story is so overwhelming that it takes us 50 days to celebrate during which time the Church continues initiating new members through the Sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation. This all leads to the climax of the season, Pentecost Sunday, when we welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit into our assembly and into our lives. It is the Spirit that keeps the work of Christ alive within us.

Our Offertory this weekend, May 19th/20th has two Intentions: our Regular Parish Support Collection and the Communications Collection. The basket will be passed once. We thank you for your generosity.

Prior Week Offertory: $5,750.00 – Budgeted Goal: $6,100.00

Weekly collection funds the day to day operations of the Parish.

Our fiscal year to date totals began as of July 1st, 2011.

This week’s second collection supports The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). If Jesus Christ were on earth today, how would he spread his message of salvation? Wouldn’t He use all communication vehicles to share the Good News? The CCC believes Jesus would use as many means as possible and that is why it supports projects that use the entire array of media tools available today to evangelize and promote Gospel values.

Please visit www.USCCB.org/ccc. for more information.

Next week’s second collection supports the formation and training of seminarians in the Archdiocese of Boston for service, we pray, as future priests. We are blessed that many are responding to the call to serve as priests. Please be generous to support these seminarians on their journey toward their ordination to the priesthood.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48

Peter was originally skeptical about preaching the Gospel to non-Jews. Then one day, the Holy Spirit summoned him to preach to the pagan army officer, Cornelius and his household. The result, as we shall see, is the first recorded conversion of Gentiles to Christianity.

Second Reading: 1 John 4:7-10

The tradition of the apostle John’s teaching is expressed in what is called the first letter of John. There is a legend that John in his old age would simply repeat over and over to his people, “Love one another”. Today’s passage from that letter particularly illustrates this story.

Gospel: John 15:9-17 (A Disciple’s Love)

Question of the Week

Adult: How is love of others connected to love for God?

Child: Who needs Jesus’ love this week? How can you show them His love?

and suicide is always a tragedy!

Some terminally ill people recover and get well.

A hospice nurse told me about a lovely 24-year-old given three months to live. Five years later, she is still with us and the mother of a child.

Every good doctor knows that medicine is an art as well as a science. No one can predict with 100% certainty who will live and who will die. Although it is rare, some terminally ill people can and do get better. Everyone who works in hospice can tell you at least one story attesting to that. They personally knew a patient who beat the odds and is still vertical today.
